Common Furnace Repairs and How They’re Fixed

The last thing you want to deal with when the mercury is hovering around the 18 degree mark is a broken furnace. Not only is it a hassle, but if your furnace breaks it can literally leave you and your family out in the cold. We specialize in furnace repair in Minneapolis, and we have a few suggestions on what to check when your furnace stops working and before you call us for furnace repair.

Check Your Thermostat
Sometimes when people think their furnace is broken, they don’t think to check the thermostat. It’s easy to bump into a thermostat and accidentally reset the set temperature. Take a few seconds to make sure the temperature on your thermostat is set where you want it to be. If this and the other suggestions below don’t work, call us about furnace repair.

Check Your Circuit Breaker
A tripped circuit is a minor problem that can cause big complications. Check your circuit breaker before you call us for furnace repair. If you see that the circuit breaker was tripped, simply flick the switch back to the “on” position and then see if your furnace is working again. If you see that a fuse is blown, replace the fuse (if you are comfortable doing so) and then see if your furnace is working.

Check Your Filter
A furnace has a filter in it that needs to be changed on a regular basis. If you think you need furnace repair, take a few minutes to check your furnace’s filter before calling us. If you pull it out and it’s dirty, replace it with a new and clean one and see if your furnace works. Sometimes, a small repair like this can make a huge difference.

Get Routine Maintenance
You should have professional furnace repair technicians come to your home at least once a month to inspect your furnace. We will make sure it’s in good shape and in good working order for the cold winter months.

Do You Need Furnace Replacement?

Winter is definitely the worst time of year to need a furnace replacement! But it always seems like appliances break down at the worst time. Freedom Heating & Air Conditioning specializes in furnace replacement in Blaine and the surrounding areas, and we know of a few different signs that you might need a new furnace.

Is your furnace more than 15 or 20 years old? If so, it’s time to start looking into furnace replacement. However, newer models of furnaces are far more energy efficient than their older counterparts, so a new one will save you money in the long term on your home heating bills.

And if you have recently noticed an increase in your heating bills, this is a good sign that furnace replacement might be in your future. An increase in heating bills could also be a result of other issues, like insulation problems. But either way, it’s still worth looking into to figure out why your heating bills are going up.

You should also think about how often you have to call for repairs on your furnace. If your answer to that question is “frequently,” then you might need to look into furnace replacement. Over the long term, furnace replacement is probably more cost-effective than furnace repair.

Listen to your furnace when it turns on and off and as it’s running. Are you hearing some funny noises? Loud pops, bangs or rattling? If so, give us a call. We should take a look at your furnace to ensure you’re not in need of a new furnace. Sometimes, noises like those can indicate it’s time for furnace replacement.

Think about your thermostat and the various rooms in your home. Are you constantly adjusting the temperature of your thermostat? Do some rooms seem to be a lot colder or warmer than others? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, give us a call. Sometimes, all it takes to fix this problem is a new thermostat. Other times, these could indicate that you need a new furnace.

Finally, look at your furnace’s pilot light. If it is yellow, give us a call. That could mean that your furnace needs to be fixed or replaced, and sometimes a yellow light can indicate that there are high levels of carbon monoxide, which is a toxic gas that can build up and cause a variety of health problems.
